Is the plural of muffin 'muffin' or 'muffins'?

I've always used muffins as the plural, but I was at a gathering recently
("bring your own plate of food to share") where several people referred to
a 'plate of muffins' as a 'plate of muffin'. There were (was?) multiple
muffins (muffin?) on the plate.

That's true, but what, specifically, is snobbish about 'muffin'?

I don't do specifics. I like to generalise and stereotype.

Go to Sweden for the reverse situation. The Swedes have decided that the singular
form of the plural word "muffins" is...muffins! Yes indeed, it is two muffins,
it is twenty-seven muffins, but it is also one muffins.
